My menu bar is supposed to "auto hide" and "auto show" if I move cursor to top of screen. It often won't auto show and I can't see why

For quite a while I find that the menu bar at top of screen will not auto show when I move the cursor to the top (it's set to auto hide when not needed). Sometimes, if I change the window I'm looking at, or start Finder, it will then again auto show. I don't know why this is happening. I am running Mac OS High Sierra version 10.13.6 on a MacBook Pro 15 inch, Mid 2015. Processor is 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB memory 1600 MHz DDR3. Storage is 500 GB Flash storage

Well, it's not completely fixed. The problem still occurs intermittently. Good news is that it seems as long as I have a Finder window active all I have to do is to switch to that window and then back to what I was doing and the auto show works again. Must be some software glitch.

To trouble shoot further you can:

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen as certain system caches, dynamic loader cache etc get cleared and

rebuilt. This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

Test issue in another user (or guest user) account https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Maybe the OP can post some feed back about their success or failure...

Unfortunately the only user setting for auto show menu bar at the top of the screen is in System Preferences>General

This preference typically only affects the auto show for your ~/Desktop screens only.

However toggling this preferences may or may not affect the Full screens as well if there is some corruption in the plist.

The next recommendation would be—

You can from the Terminal.app To Enable automatically hide/show the menu bar, copy and paste:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain _HIHideMenuBar -bool true

The idea of toggling the setting may have been helpful.

Presently auto hide and auto show are working just fine. Problem is the issues seems to be intermittent so I'll have to see if problem returns with use.

The one thing I found that consistently resolves the problem is if I bring up a Finder window when auto show refuses to work. After bringing up Finder then auto show starts working again.

I'll post again in a few days to let you know if problem has returned.

Thanks for the feedback obdoc54.
