I can receive emails on my iPhone 3G, but cannot send

iPhone 3G using 6.1.6. Model MC131B/A

email problems. I have deleted my email account and then reloaded (btinternet.com) several times but I still only receive emails. When I try to send they go to Outbox. I get a message saying ”the connection to outgoing server “apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com” failed. I use BTinternet and also BT for my mobile phone.

thanks

iPhone 3G, iOS 6.1.6

By turning off Yahoo might be the clue, if things worked (even for a short while) it might point to the possibility your smtp server settings are getting mixed up.

I still don't understand why you have the words "apple" and "yahoo" in a bt outgoing server address, ie. "apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com", I would think it should be more like "mail.btinternet.com".

As you can see from a screenshot of my iPad, the Host Name (ie. address for outgoing server) for my Pipex Mail Account is "smtp.dsl.pipex.com", it doesn't contain any other "company" names, so try editing that section to that which is required by BT.

Unless you can post a few screenshots I'm not sure what else I can add, but if you do make sure you details are masked out (as per mine).

If you are using btinternet.com’s mail service this page may help http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/~/what-are-the-settings-for -outgoing-and-incoming-bt-email-servers%…

It gives all the relevant settings that you require for iOS Mail so if you go to Settings/Accounts & Passwords and then select your mail account on the right under “Accounts”, the relevant section is under “Outgoing Mail Server”, tap on SMTP and then under “Primary Server” tap on what you consider is for BT (yours might be “apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com” but it should more likely be “mail.btinternet.com”).

This should open up the page for “Outgoing Mail Server” details for which you need to compare and alter to align with those given in the above link (this is the relevant section you need to use).

When you have finished select “Done” top right to save then reverse your way back by clicking top left each time.

To test open Mail and see if you can now send.

Thank you very much SiHancox. I’ve done as you suggested (in fact I seem to remember doing this a couple of days ago). The SMTP outgoing section all completed automatically as you showed in your instructions. Unfortunately I still get the same message:- The connection to the outgoing server “apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com” failed.

i also made BTinternet my main sever as Yahoo.mail doesn’t work on my old phone (iOS 6.1.6)

but thank you so much. Any other suggestions!?

thanks again
