Canon MP160 can't print black

I have an MP160 which refuses to print black and white text documents from Appleworks in black ink. The printer blends the color inks to create a grey version of black, while draining my color tanks very quickly. This also happens when printing black and white documents from photoshop elements.

Canon walked me through their debug process and focused on text edit. Becasue text edit could print from the black well they concluded all was well. Cept my HP and Epson printers printed normally from Appleworks and the Canon didn't.

Has anyone else any experience with Canon printers inability to use the black ink tank exclusively when printing a black and white document from Appleworks?

Fyi, we went through the process of selecting gray scale printing only. We even selected the black tank only option from the drivers. Interestingly, the black tank only option resulted in an error 91 on printing from Appleworks and PSE.

Check that the driver is set to print to plain paper. I've seen the printer do a greyscale when a different stock (paper) is selected and the original data contains rego black text. The other thing to try is going to the ColorSync setting and changing the quartz filter to 'black and white' .

And for the record, your text must be set as a colour other than 100% RGB, hence the CMY being used. You can check this by using the Digital Color Meter utility for your documents in PSE and AppleWorks.
