Keyboard issues on MacBook Pro (2017)

Good day to you all,

I have a MacBook Pro (2017) and until yesterday whilst pressing for example the "A" key I had the option of turning it into an "Umlaut" (A with two dots) or accents etc. This option seems to be lost.. I tried the keyboard options in System Preferences - to no avail.

I would be grateful for any ideas.

If no additional characters are available for the key you're holding, the accent menu doesn't appear. The menu also doesn't appear when the Key Repeat slider is set to Off in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences.
