I have an iMac and would like to use a USB microscope on it, the software supplied only works on a Microsoft PC. Is there any software available for the iMac I could use

sure- I think there's some: Plugable USB 2.0 USB Microscope - Plugable. should work with Photobooth maybe VLC.
Don't know the model/kind of the USB microscope you wanna use, so my answer is limited.

I believe you shouldn't need any software for Mac. Try using it through PhotoBooth.
