spotlight does not search or find anything on my hard drive

Entering a search on my desktop 'spotlight' fails to locate any files. All items in the preferences are checked, i.e., folders, etc. but nothing appears in the finder list.

Spotlight in Finder window isn't finding files in the current folder I have a MacBook Pro M2 with Ventura 13.4.1, and I started this machine from a Time Machine migration of my previous Mac. I notice that when I use Spotlight from a Finder window to search for a file, it will find the file in "This Mac" but if I switch to the current folder (selecting the name of the folder which is shown next to the "This Mac" option), the result is always empty even if the file is definitely there (and shown in the list with the "This Mac" scenario). I saw a similar issue reported at Spotlight search does not return results … - Apple Community but none of the proposed solutions there helped. I don't think this can be an indexing issue since Spotlight is quite successful at finding the files quickly when I'm searching the whole system.

My Spotlight Won't Do Even Simple Searches! I can no longer find any file in my Documents folder. Even when I put in the title of a document, it shows nothing. I've unselected Documents from the list of folders to check, in System Preferences.. Then rechecked it again, and yet, several hours later, still drawing blanks. This is quite frustrating and there's no reason this should be acting in this manner. When even the most basic, simple processes aren't working, something's really off.

Thanks, I’ll try it....additionally, I re-indexed and then restarted...spotlight is now finding stuff...maybe ‘cause it’s a brand new machine..?.,

If it's brand new machine, Spotlight may have been indexing when you tried it. The first time you startup Spotlight does an index. It takes a long time and your Mac will be slow until Spotlight finishes.

Have you tried rebuilding Spotlight as the Apple Support Topic you referenced says?

Personally, I find the free utility EasyFind much more useful for searches than Spotlight.
