^^^^^^
are you sure you spelled the password corectly? 🙂
Windows.

Just kidding. Couldn't let an opportunity like that pass. 😉

Sometimes ISP's are just set up better for windows. I remember
having trouble with a linux box years ago. I think the problem
was that my pppd was trying to use PAP and the server was set
for CHAP - or vice versa - and the only way I found that out was
by checking the pppd logs. And then I had to set it in verbose
mode.

I usually like to find out what's going on first. PPP has some
protocols it does first: IIRC - link control, ip control. Then it
tries to authenticate you as a user, using either password (PAP)
or challenge (CHAP). It sounds like you got past the first
protocols and failed and the authentication. The only way I
know of to know why is to check the logs. Why don't you find
one and post it here?

Bingo! Odds are that your ISP is using CHAP. Now to get your
machine to...

Okay, this is where the Mac/Unix boundary gets fuzzy for me.
I think the place to start is the utility called "Internet Connect".
Clicking the VPN button gets me started on a dialog which
starts talking the right language, but no direct setting. It's
possible that just having something set up will force Mac OS
to use CHAP. Give that a try first.

In the Terminal app (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
open a window, enter:

sudo vi /etc/ppp/options
(enter su password)
when the vi window comes up enter:

arequire-chap:wq

exit Terminal, you're done.

P.S. While this is what I came up with, and it's clear it's
an authentication protocol problem, I'm still a little wary
because I thought all modern pppd's used CHAP by
default. It may well be that you have a require-pap line
in there already. If that's true, please post the entire
file and we'll tell you what to do.

I'm sorry, sometimes I forget that not everyone know how to
use vi. Does /etc/ppp/options already exist on your MacBook?
In Ternminal, enter "ls /etc/ppp/options". If it doesn't exist,
enter "sudo touch /etc/ppp/options". To make it writable enter
"sudo chmod 666 /etc/ppp/options". Then enter

echo "require-chap" >> /etc/ppp/options

That should do it.

I can't find anything. I'm assuming because it's unix under the
hood that the above solution will work.
