cannot see photos taken on iphone 6 on macbook air

After taking photos with my iPhone 6 (11.4.1), I cannot see them on my MacBook Air (High Sierra 10.13.6) in the Photos library. They do, however show up in iCloud. I have checked preferences in iCloud for Photos which is turned on, and also on the phone.

Any help is appreciated, this seems like a simple setting.
