As others have indicated this is nothing to do with Infrared. (For what it's worth the only current Mac model to have an IR interface is the Mac mini.)

As standard iTunes defaults to launching when an iOS device i.e. iPhone or iPad is plugged in. This is as Luis Sequeira1 indicates due to the 'iTunes Helper' tool. This is as standard automatically added to each user account as a Login Item.

You can remove this from your Login Items so iTunes is no longer going to auto-launch when you connect your iPhone

  • Go to System Preferences
  • Click on Users & Groups
  • Click on your own User account
  • Click on iTunes Helper to select it
  • Click on the minus '-' symbol below that box (this will remove iTunes Helper from the list)

This will only take affect after you logout and log back in. To make it take immediate affect do the following.

  • Launch 'Activity Monitor' this is an app in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder it might be easier to find it via Spotlight
  • Look for an entry called 'iTunes Helper'
  • Click on 'iTunes Helper' to select it
  • Now click on the Quit button in the top left - this looks like a circle with a cross in the middle
  • In the resulting dialog box tell it to Quit the process

So nothing to do with infrared, which does not even exist in recent macs.

As I wrote before, this can happen when you connect the cable between your iPhone and your mac, and I have told you what to do.

I don't think iTunes will start just by having the iPhone in the same vicinity, without physically connecting to your mac.

If that is what you are saying, I'd be very surprised.

The title of your post bears no relation to what you wrote.

What is your question, after all?

Does it have to do with the infra-red sensor - by the way, what is the model of your mac? - or with iPhone and iTunes.

If you don't want iTunes to start automatically when you connect your iPhone, just remove "iTunes Helper" from your list of Login Items, then logout and login again, or restart your mac.
