2009 MBP target disk mode?

How would I be able to use target disk mode to connect a 2009 MacBook Pro to a 2015 MacBook Pro? I have had issues seeing the hard drive when I connected it to a 2004 iBook g4. I keep having major issues with the finder (10.11.6), and I believe the hard drive is the root cause. Thanks

Target drive will not show up using target disk mode over thunderbolt I have a 2011 MacBook Pro and 2013 MacBook Pro connected with a Thunderbolt cable. The 2011 has a Thunderbolt 1 port and the 2013 has a Thunderbolt 2 port. I'm trying to connect them using target disk mode but regardless if I put one machine or the other into target disk mode I cannot see or mount the other disk. I've tried booting both machines into target disk mode and I've looked into System Information to verify that they see each other and they do. In the finder I've made sure that network volumes and drives are checked. I've also checked disk utility and the external drives don't show up. Any ideas? The only thing that I see on Apple's site about using target disk mode mentions Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 3, firewire, and USB C. They make no mention of Thunderbolt 1. Is Thunderbolt 1 now unsupported?

Macbook Pro: Problem getting external HDD to recognize Using Macbook Pro (13-inch, 2017, two thunderbolt 3 ports) w/macOS 10.13.6 (17G11023). There is 2.12GB available space on the HDD. Updates cannot be installed because of low disk space. I want to connect an external USB drive in order to back up the user's files, then erase and reinstall the OS. When I connect a new Seagate external 2TB to the machine, the drive powers on but isn't recognized by the system. The drive tests good in a Windows system and on another Mac. I'm using a QacQoc USB-C adapter to connect the external drive. It's been tested good on another Mac with the same external drive that's not recognized on this machine. Any help for a novice?

By using a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
