random freezing in macos 10.13.6

lately i've been experiencing macOS unexpectedly freezing without any way to bring up activity monitor or recover.

do not know why, as i have not installed any recent new software .... the only new software that i get is updates for office 2016, and I regularly use CCleaner to flush out caches and other useless files.

if there is a way to find out what's causing this, i'd like to know if anyone can help. first i'd like to try troubleshooting methods before resorting to something more drastic like reinstalling macOS ....

thank you

macOS High Sierra (10.13), 2.0 GHz/16GB/256GB

If you just reinstall the system from the Recovery volume that would not delete your applications nor your data files.

I see you have 4 occurrences of ConnectMeNow in your User Login Items section. Clear out 3 of them via the System/Users & Groups/Login Items pane.

Next, Bboot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and run from there for a while to see if you get any freezing, etc.

Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

i looked at the report and cleaned up the system as much as i could. removed duplicate services at startup, disabled fuse, removed one internet plugin.

it seems thats not helping. today i had 2 freezes and both happened to occur while safari was the only thing open and running.

so perhaps a reinstall will clean out some garbage over the 3 years or so of performing mac os upgrades. ive never clean installed or reinstalled on this computer.

not sure if doing this would achieve what i want.

i downloaded onyx and ran the maintenance tasks ....

after a few intentional restarts and using macOS as well as Windows 10 normally, i have not experienced freezing yet on the macOS side.

even better than etrecheck .... onyx is completely free and it fixes issues.

i have about ten 32 bit apps, typically 3 of those run as processes when booted into the OS.

cannot quite pinpoint the causes of the freeze, when looking at the error logs it looks like an apple process that crashes (its typically the same one).

cannot recall what the process name is. but ive been using onyx occassionally to run maintenance. id say that random freezes are occuring a bit less, but still there from time to time.

I have tried a bunch of stuff .... including reinstalling from recovery, resetting NVRAM, resetting SMC, hardware test (comes back ok) .... am still getting random and frequent (more than once a day) freezing of the system .... where my only option is to hold down the power and do a reboot.

i'm left to believe that this is more of a macos-side issue, and it didn't happen when i had Sierra. It started happening on High Sierra and now it's continuing on Mojave.

From the console/reports/system.log, here is an excerpt of my most recent hangup, the few entires that appear before "BOOT TIME" is what was happening when my computer froze and I had to force a shutdown:

Oct 21 20:27:09 MBP com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.adobe.ARMDCHelper.cc24aef4a1b90ed56a725c38014c95072f92651fb65e1bf9c8e43c37 a23d420d[893]): Service exited with abnormal code: 111

Oct 21 20:31:31 MBP com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.xpc.launchd.domain.user.501): Service "com.apple.xpc.launchd.unmanaged.loginwindow.109" tried to register for endpoint "com.apple.tsm.uiserver" already registered by owner: com.apple.SystemUIServer.agent

Oct 21 20:33:33 localhost bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1540168413 0

can i get some insight into what might be happening based on these log entries ?

i'd like to get down to the bottom of this issue and fix it. I'd rather avoid erasing the apfs partition and reinstalling clean. unless that's the only option ....

the macos experience, of late, has been getting more unpleasant and that doesn't help. on the windows side, my windows 10 installation (boot camp) has been running solid for a few years now ....

i suspect my issue was the app i had used to automount my nas shares (connectmenow).

always grinding my teeth over why mounting shares on mac is the way it is out of the box ....

especially when there is more than one share mount coming from the same physical nas ip, with different login credentials .... apple really did not care to bake in that functionality thats in windows 10 for how drives mapped and permanently mount on login.

but i chanced upon an example script out there, turned it into an app using script editor and put that in my login items. so my shares mount at login and no finder windows to close.

if anyone needs that lmk i can post it.

it seems my random beach balling situation isn't caused - after all - by any 3rd party apps i have installed.

it's continued to happen at random recently and i noticed that most times it is when i have a safari session open.

can anyone help me figure out (using the logs in console) how i can look up when safari is freezing ?

once it starts beach balling, unfortunately the whole computer hangs up and i have no choice but to force restart.

out of nowhere today, happened again. this time all i had running was itunes and outlook.

strangely, i thought to check spotlight settings in preferences and found that the drives i previously put there were gone.

am running 10.14.2

i cannot even pull up a force quit with command-option-esc when this happens.

getting even more disappointed having hoped that the recent .2 update may have resolved the issue.
