What Terence says, with some cautions.

Casual exchange of simple spreadsheets between Numbers and Excel (with Numbers doing the translation at both ends) works fine, but…

Numbers is not Excel, and Excel is not Numbers.

Converting an Excel file to Numbers involves translating from one file format to another. The reverse operation requires another translation, in the other direction.

There are features supported in Excel that are not supported in Numbers. There are features in Numbers that are not supported in Excel. Anything relying on such a feature will not survive the translation to the application format that does not support that feature. At best, the translation will include the last value calculated by the unsupported formula or other method.

IF your files will be repeatedly transferred from one format to the other and back again, or if any significant number of the files use 'must have' features exclusive to the source application, you should seriously consider installing one of the open source applications (eg. LibreOffice) modeled more closely on Excel, etc., or installing Microsoft's Office for Mac at your end.

Barry
