When you think in terms of adding ad blocking software, it makes sense to use software that is approved by Apple.

I'd recommend clicking on the Safari menu at the top left of your screen, and choosing 'Safari Extensions'. There is a panel full of software there that works well with Safari, including some ad blocking software.

Better safe than...well, you know.

Mac 10.13.6

Safari 12.0

It is safe and it does work. If you spend time using Facebook, you might want to try a different ad blocking extension. The current version of AdBlock has been causing some people difficulties with Facebook.

Caveat: I think I jumped the gun and am posting this in the wrong place. I just realized that the Q&A was on Sept. 8 and the person who asked about AdBlock was running OS 10.9 (Mavericks) whereas I'm running OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra)

If this makes a difference in a possible answer to my question, please let me know where I should have posted this. Thanks.

So I don't quite understand about AdBlock. I've had it for years. I don't think I ever updated it to AdBlock Plus but wouldn't swear to that. However, several weeks ago after opening Safari I got a message (and no I didn't make a screen print but should have) saying that Safari was turning off AdBlock and that I should uninstall it. Safari said that AdBlock was slowing down browsing. That is what I scribbled down so it's a very indirect quote.

About the same time I was having a totally different issue with my iPhone and called Apple Support on 9/19/18. After discussing my iPhone issue I was transferred to another area of Tech Support to ask why Safari would just up and turn off AdBlock. I was told that a new version of Safari was download on 9/18 and that might be why Safari turned off AdBlock. I was advised to uninstall it so I did. Ever since, I have been bombarded with adds, pop-ups, etc.

As far as browsing speed, initially it seemed a little better. But lately it's been as slow as molasses.

I don't use Facebook very often so that's not an issue for me.

Prior to reading your answer as to whether AdBlock is safe & legit, I did a quick look at Safari Extensions and didn't find it to be helpful.

Thanks, Eric. Because I had previously called Apple Support to ask why Safari would do such a dastardly deed as to turn off AdBlock, I found my case ID and called Apple Support back. We both concluded (or assumed) that Safari removed AdBlock when Safari was updated to 12.0. So I have now reinstalled AdBlock (not AdBlock Plus) and so far so good. If I should get another message from Safari telling me that it has turned off AdBlock I will make a screenshot and call Support again. If it would be helpful, I'd be happy to address the issue here again.

I appreciate your response and hope that it might help others who may be having the same issue.

Regards,

Dazed
