Photos Version 3.0 crashes (quits unexpectedly)when opened

For the last few months Photos Version 3.0 (3291.13.210) crashes when I attempt to open it (running High Sierra 10.13.1 on a 2017 iMac). I get a flash of the open app and then the problem (crash) report. If I repair the library Photos will open a time or two, but then crash upon startup again. Sometimes the library repair doesn't work and the crash happens. Most recently Photos tells me the photo library has inconsistencies and must be repaired, but then gets stuck in a loop where it I click on the "repair" button, the dialog box disappears, then reappears with the same, over and over - I have to force quit to close Photos. I have a backup of the library (time machine) and so am only a little worried about losing photographs. I'm not sure what to try next?!? Any ideas or help is appreciated! Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Where is the library located? If on an external HD how is the drive formatted and connected to your iMac?

Do you have the iCloud Photo Library enabled?

Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Are you able to and does it work as expected?

If it doesn't log into another user account and repeat the test library.

If still not working boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try your library from there.

Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Uninstall according to the developer's instructions also Symantec/Norton software. It's totally unnecessary for Macs and does more harm that good. All it does is lighten your bank account and increase the load on the system resources.

After uninstalling, boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and run the library from there. If it doesn't crash reboot normally and test again.

If it does crash, the only thing I can think of is to repair your library (launch Photos with the Option+Command keys held down). However, that's going to trigger another upload of the library to iCloud.

This user tip describes what you need to know to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats

The fact that you were able to create a new library, import some Photos into it and use it tells us that the problem is limited to your current library.

You have a user launch agent, com.apple.MobileMeSyncClientAgent.plist, loaded. I have not idea what it's doing there as MobileMe was discontinued by Apple around 7 years ago. Uninstall it.

Mr. Toad,

Thank you for your help.

  1. The library is located on the Mac.
  2. iCloud Library is enabled
  3. not sure regarding managed vs. referenced. I have the box checked under iCloud preferences, importing (copy items to the Photos Library).
  4. Yes, I am able to import photos into a test Library. Not sure how this helps? Can I export the photos from my old library into the new library?
