icloud email settings on Android
The icloud email on my Android phone can't connect to the email server because it can't verify account information.
There is no response from the server.
All settings look correct. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

If it is asking for a password then you should use the app-specific password, not the normal one. There wouldn't be a separate option for the app-specific password in addition to the usual one.
I just looked at the GMail app: presumably this is what you are doing? -
I can't check it further than that as I don't want to actually set up an account. Does this method not work for you?
Not quite clear about the situation. Considering the iCloud address you are trying to set up:
If it is the main @icloud.com address that you set up when you first opened a different account from the one you have already set up on your phone then you should be able to set up that account in the Mail app, but you will have to set up an app-specific password for that account as I described above.
Email aliases are additional addresses you can create on an account - up to three - and these are not accounts: they deliver into the same inbox as the main address so you don't need to set them up in the Mail app if you already have the main address set up.
I suppose it might be one of these server hiccups that make the internet so interesting. I should leave it for a day or so and try again.
Hello Roger,
This solved my problem. I appreciate your time in this and I thank you very much.
I have another question. I was able to set up one email account with your instructions but not a second email account on the same phone.
Again, thank you!
Barbara
Do you mean a non-Apple email address? You should be able to add any number of accounts in the Mail app. A second iCloud account's address would be added in the same way, but 'email alias' addresses arfen't accounts and deliver into the inbox of the account they belong to, so you don't set them up separately.
Hello Roger,
Once again I have to thank you for your help. Yes, it is another apple icloud account address. However, I don't know how to set up an alias but will do a search.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Barbara
Hello Roger,
I have 2 separate icloud email accounts on my MacBook Pro. With your instructions I was able to set up one of those icloud email accounts on my Android phone.
I have tried to use an app-specific password to set up the second account on the phone but there isn't a place to enter it.
There was a place for the password with the first account.
One email account is for family and friends. The other is for insurance, banking, newsletters etc.
Thank you,
Barbara
Hello Roger,
I've tried that and just tried again but it did not accept the account password or the app specific password.
Tried another way and it accepted the password but then received message "There was a problem setting up security for this account. the highest security may not be supported" Learn more.. read that and suggestion was to change port setting which was set at 143. Earlier instructions said to use 993. In either case it couldn't open connection to server.
I also tried the various options for Security type.
Thank you,
Barbara
Hello Roger,
I have really appreciated your time and help.
For some reason, setting up a second email account differs from the first. No option for an app-specific password.
It is the incoming server asking for a password and I don't know what the password could be. I have tried many possibilities to no avail.
I'll let you know when and how this situation is resolved.
Thank you!
Kind regards,
Barbara
Hello Roger,
I tried the app-specific password a couple of times before and just did so now. After a minute or so I get this
"unable to connect to email server to verify account information. No response from server."
Thanks to your earlier instructions the first email account was so easy to set up. I don't know why a second is such a problem.
Thank you,
Barbara
I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions: it sounds as if it may be an Android problem - if you can find a forum for that it might be worth asking there.
You presumably have the settings given in this Apple page. However, that's only the beginning. As you are using a non-Apple app to access your email, you are now required to use an 'app-specific' password in place of your normal iCloud password. In order to do this you need to set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, and for this you need to have either a Mac running El Capitan or above, or an iOS device running iOS9 or above.

If you are unable to set up two-factor authentication you should set up 2-step verification and use that to create an app-specific password (see link below) . Then go to http://appleid/apple.com , select 'Password and Security'; click 'Generate an App-Specific Password' and follow the instructions. Once you have the password, copy it and paste it into the password field in the application instead of your usual iCloud password. You should also keep a note of it (though you can generate a new one if required).

You will need to nominate a 'trusted device' - any phone capable of receiving SMS messages. There will be a 2-day wait before you can complete the process.
(A particular caveat (about 2-step only) - you will be issued with a 'Recovery Key' in case you lose your 'trusted device'. Make sure to write this down and keep it in a safe place; if you lose both it and your trusted device you will be permanently locked out of your ID. You'd be surprised at the number of people who've posted here that they've got themselves into just that position.)
