Apple says max memory 8 GB for my MBP but It actually supports 16 GB

Hi there,

I am wondering to upgrade my memory as my MBP lags now and not working smooth after upgrading to High Sierra.

My model is - "Core i5" 2.5 13" Mid-2012 Mid-2012 - MacBookPro9,2

I checked in apple official page and it says max memory can be only 8GB but many of my friends have upgraded the same model to 16 GB and it is working fine. I want to upgrade my memory to 8 + 2 GB but want to be sure there won't be any bad effect to my mac machine as I am upgrading for more than what Apple recommends.

Please suggest me, is there any chance of getting any issue if I upgrade my system for 8GB + 2 GB = 10 GB?

Thanks, Sanny

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), Current RAM - 2 + 2 GB

Apple publishes a maximum RAM capacity when the computer is released which are based on then current RAM technology. However during the life of that computer model RAM manufacturers often release RAM upgrades which increases the capacity. To my recollection Apple has never revised a computer spec sheet to reflect the new capacity.

Hello,

Apple’s published maximum values are strangely conservative. People upgrade those machines to 16 GB all the time.

However, I doubt 10 GB would be worth the effort, assuming you could even find a 2 GB DIMM chip for that machine. Just upgrade it to 16 GB.

But then again, 8 GB should be plenty. If your machine is running noticeably slow, then perhaps you have some runaway software or adware. If not, your hard drive could be failing. An SSD will give you a performance boost greater than any memory upgrade.
