Watch iTunes content on smart TV

I wanted to buy or rent a documentary on iTunes to watch on my Samsung smart TV. From the previous conversation thread, it looks like it's not possible without purchasing AppleTV. I will get my movies, documentaries etc. elsewhere (Hulu, Sling, YouTube). Please advise if this is actually possible. Glad I didn't purchase without checking.
