MacBook restarts when closing the lid

Not always but frequently the MacBook restarts when closing the screen. in other words, when I close it it's supposed to just go to sleep but we hear the restart chime and when I open it it's starting up back to the login windows. Not very safe for unsaved items. Its happened a few times this week and a couple of times last night. I have the Black 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo. Anyone know about this? Just wanted to do some research before making the call for service. Only had this for about 2 weeks.

Just adding my machine on to the list of restating when closing. No additional hardware added, my thought is it always seems to do it when i have just sat it down and close the lid rather hard, im wondering if the SMS had "parked" the hd and then it cannot store standby to disk. It only happens once every couple weeks/ months, so unless it starts increasing in frequency, no biggie.

I'm having the same problem with my Black MacBook Core2Duo w/ 2GB RAM. I have this machine with the same configuration since the Core2Duo's came out last year, although I did add the RAM myself when I received the unit.

I've had this problem for a while now, but recently it has intensified, I hope there is a solution soon. It would be catastrophic if I had a Hard Drive failure as a result of this.

I've had my laptop for about three weeks and I've had this happen a few times. The first couple of times I didn't notice until I went back to open it and it had clearly restarted. Tonight I heard the restart chime shortly after I closed the lid. Just adding to the list of folks who also are also experiencing this as I continue to browse the discussions...

I am also having the same issue.

I have a White MacBook Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM. Factory installed. I've noticed this happen a few times a week since I got it January. Various OS X updates along the way. Problem still not fixed. Has anyone who took the MacBook into the Apple Store have feedback for us? I called and opened a ticket and kind of got blown off with a just reset the PMU answer.

This really is getting a bit annoying.

Restarting when the lid is closed! I have been having this problem non-stop since I got my MBP 15" 2.33 on Jan 29, 2007. The machine was built in week 3 of 2007.

I have also had a problem with kernel panics (which may be related to MBP wireless card issues). Also numerous program crashes. Problems waking from sleep.

Under direction from numerous level two product specialists: Tried archive and install, total disk erase and install, swapping RAM in and out, 24 hour extended hardware tests... nothing.

Eventually Apple replaced the logic board and "top deck" and thermal spacer module... which did not fix the problem.

Apple replaced the airport card....which did not fix the problem.

(The Genius Bar managers at the Soho store in NYC claim they have never heard of this. They also claim they never heard of the wireless kernel panic issue with MBP, which is ludicrous.)

It may be the applecare/genius bar people are being told not to admit these issues, and to treat each one as if it is possibly the fault of the consumer. Very unfortunate policy if true.

What is obviously true is that even with all the evidence that these are systemic issues, the support people are HIGHLY resistant to replacing defective machines. I have spent literally days trying to fix my machine, and countless phone calls to apple and numerous trips to the genius bar.

Finally after 3 months of constant phone calls to apple, constant reinstalling of software, and the computer being in the apple shop twice for almost 30 days in 30 months, they are replacing my machine.

I have the same problem with my 2-month-old White MacBook Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM... random restarts when I close the lid. Bye bye data. I'm so unhappy to see it's not just me and there's not going to be a simple fix. No kernel panics yet... that's why I got rid of my old iMac, actually... too many kernel panics caused by a peripheral wireless card. (That machine also started acting up right after I got it. crashing horribly and, per Apple support advice, had to be reinitialized 4 or 5 times (fun!), which only stopped when I installed OSX.) Sigh. I may have to stop being a Mac cheerleader to my friends. I paid too much to be this aggravated. Anyway, I'll call Aplle today; wish me luck.

A Cautious Update:

I don't know where I read this, but I recall coming across an article that said something about Widgets and problems with Wireless connection reliability. Since I had that problem I turned off a few Widgets especially the ones that had to do with IP's and networks. As a result (NOT IMMEDIATE) I am now noticing a more responsive and reliable wireless connectivity. What's interesting though is that after reading the earlier post by Rolandus I have to agree that while my wireless got better, I haven't had a strange restart in a while either. Coincidence? perhaps...

The other point I want to make. Being that this is a User-to-User Forum, Apple does not necessarily read or scan through these forums to pick up on hardware/software problems. If you want to be heard by Apple I urge you to report the porblem either via telephone or online.

I am on my third Macbook in a row that has also done this. There doesn't seem to be any fix for this so I am switching to the Macbook Pro. I haven't heard of this same problem happening with this. If I were you, I would demand a replacement. I highly recoment not waisting your valuable time going through Apple Care for this one.

Blessings,
