Have you set some Sync options in iTunes so that music is set to copy (not transfer) music to your iPod?
Have you managed to add music to this iPod before now?
Connect the iPod to your computer
Click on the iPod icon that appears in the top of the iTunes window:
and then:
select the Summary/Music pane (1.)
tick the Sync music box (2.)
in (3.) choose either:
Entire music library (which adds all the music in your Library) - or
selected playlists, artists, albums and genres (which then opens section 4.)
if you chose selected playlists, artists, albums and genres in (3.), tick the boxes for the items (in 4.) that you wish to add to your iPod
click on the Sync button in the lower right of the iTunes window (not shown in the screenshots)
once the Sync has completed, safely disconnect the iPod (eject it) using the eject icon which appears just above the battery icon (shown in screenshots)
