HDMI is not showing up as an sound output option

When I plug the HDMI cable into my MacBook pro and turn on the TV, I see the image of my desktop but audio come from the laptop speakers. The option to choose HDMI as the sound output in system preferences is not there. I have had no problem with this before. Please help.
