"Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed" error when using Wifi

I use a couple of different WiFi providers when I'm out at cafes and haven't had a problem sending emails until a couple of weeks ago.

Now I get this:

The server response was: 5.7.1 <xx@xxxxxx.xx.xx>... Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed [60.245.xx.xxx]

I'm using the correct SMTP server for each provider. At first I thought it must be a problem with the providers but now I guess it's me. 😟

Is my computer somehow giving the wrong information to the SMTP server? Why can't it find me? I can ping my IP from an external site (but can't traceroute).
Neither provider requires (SMTP) authentication once I've logged in via their website.

I have a wireless setup at home (Belkin) and don't have any issues with sending emails from there.

I've had a look through these forums plus many others over the last few days, with no luck.
I removed my com.apple.mail.plist and re-added all my accounts, in the hope that might fix it. But alas, no.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Please explain Neither provider requires (SMTP) authentication once I've logged in via their website. . Website, if referring to access via a Browser, does not reflect on what is needed while in an email program, such as Mail.

Some WiFi providers will require that you only use an authenticated SMTP, and these may have recently altered their standards. Please explain the relationship, if any, between the provider of the connection at these WiFi spots, and the provider of the SMTP and email address?

Hi Ernie, thanks for responding.

What I meant was that it's a public (but not free) WiFi Hotspot that requires that once I connect to the Hotspot, I must first login via a web browser in order to access the internet.
I just wanted to cover bases and say that SMTP authentication isn't required and the only Outgoing details I need to specify are the SMTP server: mail.wifly.com.tw

Hi Ernie, thanks for your persistence in trying to resolve my issue - it's greatly appreciated!

I am connected to WiFly again now and although I can ping my assigned IP via DNSStuff.com I still get the same error message in Mail - "Relaying denied. IP name lookup failed [60.245.xx.xx]".

Is an 'IP name lookup' more interrogative than a Ping? Since I can ping my computer from an external source then I'd suspect that it's not my computer's issue, right? I just can't imagine that the ISP (WiFly, Taipei's city-wide WiFi) is having issues for 3 or 4 weeks.

Are there logfiles for Mail that I could check out?

The response to a ping, when made, does not "let you in" but only says "I'm here -- hit me with your credentials, if you want a handshake".

Try creating a New User Account, on your Mac, and as that New User, set up Mail for testing the next time you are connected to this service. See:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html

Make to sure to set to leave messages on the server, for downloading in your normal User Account.

Let me know the result of this.
