restore ipad backup to iphone does not restore the contents

I am in urgent need of restoring a iPhone Old Backup. I have a backup that says unknown and a iPad Backup that was saved at OS 10.3.3.

The restore finishes but there is no iMessage content in it. Like a fresh iPhone.

I have also tried a force reset by holding Home and Side Bar to restore from iTunes and same result.

HELP!

Hi jk5598224,

To provide some additional clarification: the iPad backup made on iOS 10.3.3 can only be restored to an iOS device running iOS 10.3.3 or later. It is preferable that you restore the backup in question your iPad 5th generation in order to restore all of the data contained in the backup, such as Messages. Restoring from the older iPad backup would not downgrade your iOS currently on the iPad either. Instead, you may see a message during the restore process indicating that you need to update your software:

Restoring from an iTunes or iCloud backup when a later version of iOS is required - Apple Support

This will ensure that your data is restored from the iOS 10.3.3 backup, however your device will remain on the latest iOS version. Let us know if you have additional questions from here.

Take care.

Yes I know this after extensive googling and 4 days of restoring, re-immaging and so on. In addition you can not restore a prior backup that was saved at a down level iOS version. I MUST restore a iPad 10.3.3 backup SOMEWHERE to retrieve backed up messages. I currently have a iPhone 5 (10.3.3), MacBook Pro, iPhone 6s and also a 5th Generation iPad which can NOT be downgraded to 10.3.3 because A 10.3.3 does not support iPad 5th Generation and B Apple does not have signed OS any longer for prior versions... I have spent days learning this.

if anybody knows a 3rd Party Tool that can let obtain those message please advise. It's extremely important to obtain the messages from that backup. I thought I was golden as I have a iPhone5 at 10.3.3 but messages do not transfer from iPad backup. Ayygh carumba.

Hello jk5598224,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that when you restore your iPhone from a backup made on your iPad, certain content does not restore to the device. I would be happy to help provide some clarification about this behavior.

When restoring from a backup that was made on a different type of device, certain content will not restore from the backup. This includes Messages. Visit the following link to learn more:

About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support

Specifically, check out this section:

Can I use my device's backup for another kind of device, like an iPhone backup for an iPad?

While you can restore a device from a backup of another kind of device, like using an iPad backup for an iPhone, certain types of content won't transfer. This content includes photos, Messages and attachments in Messages*, Voice Memos, and apps that aren't compatible with the device that you’re setting up. For example, apps compatible only with iPad won't transfer to your iPhone.

* If your devices use iCloud and Messages in iCloud, your iMessages and text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages are automatically stored in iCloud.

Take care!
