Apple watch bands compatibility

I, i bought an Apple Watch Series 4 40mm.

Before the keynote i was sure to buy the 42mm because 38mm was too tiny, so i pre-bought a 42mm band. But when series 4 has been released i decided to buy the 40mm size, because 44mm was too big.

The question is: does my 42mm band fits my 40mm AW?

For other bands shopping, which rule should i follow?

It's something like this or i can buy any kind of band and it will fit perfectly with my Apple Watch?:

  • If you have a 40mm --> 38mm
  • If you have 42mm --> 44mm
  • Watch Series 4 (GPS) Alum 40mm, watchOS 4.3.2

    The cross compatibility is:

    Old 38mm fits new 40mm

    Old 42mm fits new 44mm

    This applies both ways, Accessory to watch or watch to accessory. There is actually very little difference between the overall sizes 38/40 or 42/44mm, most of the gain seems to be by increasing the usable area of the screen and the 40mm body is only 0.7mm wider than it’s 38mm relative.
