I would first ask if you are able to play/stream any WMV content? For example, can you play back this video: http://media1.yourdailymedia.com/files/cpuP7tJ9DyyC.wmv

If so, then your Flip4Mac is working well. What is more likely, is that the particular WMV you are trying to view is in an unsuported codec. Even though it appears to be a WMV file, the encoding was done with a unique, non-standard method.

If you'd like, post the link and I'll give it a try, but it's becomimg more common to see these specialized formats that don't comply with usual encoding techniques.

Can you make sure you've got the latest Flip4Mac by going to the preferences and clicking on the Update tab. Also, in the prefs, there are some customization options. Under the Plug In tab I only have "maintain aspect ration" checked, and in the "Movie tab" I only have "open avi files" checked. You might try to check "create streaming movies" and see what happens.

That link should have produces a progressive download of the video when I go to it.

A better way to test your install of Flip4Mac would be to:
1. Copy (do not click) on the link provided above).
2. Open QuickTime Player and then "Open URL".
3. "Paste" the URL and see what happens.

yeah, that's another good way to test playback...however, it won't tell you what version of Flip4Mac is running....best way for that is in the prefs.

I'll first admit that I am very biased and, for those reasons, still use the WMP Player for Mac to view those formats.
After 15 years of fighting the "format wars" I've learned a few things:
1. If it doesn't "open" I probably do not need to view it.
2. If the page code or file format is written for MS "machines" I send an email (only one) suggesting Mac support.
3. Since most Web authors say "what Mac support?" I then don't spend any more time on the issue.
One of Microsoft's "strategies" is to promote this level of "ours is better because more of you use it".
But the true "hidden" agenda is that these Mac users can try to lay blame on QuickTime (and Apple) for failure to display their proprietary formats when, in reality, Microsoft intends to give us a taste and then pull the plug.
Microsoft invented AVI and QuickTime followed with support (via QuickTime).
Microsoft pulled support for AVI and invented WMP.
WMP support ended when MS failed to update WMP for Mac and now third party vendors get to continue the divide.
Apple and QuickTime have lead in the standards used in video distribution and now a 5% company holds 70% of music downloads and soon 30% of "video" downloads.
H.264 makes it happen and MPEG-4 formats will make a better day for all users. But only if they stop downloading AVI's or the continuing stream of M$ changes to formats, codecs and containers.

Well said Kirk. There are times when I just need to view a WMV, and I choose Flip4Mac to make that happen, however, as you have said, there seems to be an ever expanding stream of codecs, and F4M just cannot keep up with each one. I've also heard that the majority of Quicktime sales is to PC users, so why can't everyone just settle on a format?
Anyway...guys, like the starter of this thread, are gonna continue to run into problems, and I'll try to help them with F4M, for now.

OK...lets start back at the basics. Select your System Preferences by clicking on that icon in the dock, or dragging down to it in the Apple pull down menu in the upper left of the screen.

In the list of all the different preferences is Flip4Mac WMV. Once you open that up you will see tabs for the various settings. Click on the Update tab and hit Check Now. It will query their site and advise if it's necessary to update.

If for some reason you are still having trouble with this, then I'd suggest you go to: http://www.Flip4Mac.com/download.htm Proceed to download and install the 2.1 version

Now...once you've confirmed (or reinstalled) F4M is current, and you're still having a problem viewing the link I posted. I would then suggest referring to my previous reply as per checking the custom preferences settings in the F4M preferences;

I think you've found the problem. Very simply, head over to http://www.Flip4Mac.com/download.htm Download the free player, install and start playing WMV.

Flip4Mac is a Plug In and not an application. You must have an installer somewhere....or really, just toss whatever you see that says Flip4Mac and re-download it from http://www.Flip4Mac.com/download.htm

Then use the installer that appears after the .dmg file expands and you'll know it will be installed correctly
