grey bar at bottom of iphone after ios 12 install
Have an iPhone X, just did iOS 12 install and now have a grey colored bar at bottom around bottom apps( picture attached)

It's the dock. It's always been there.
Yours however seems to be a bit opaque.
Check Settings->General->Accessibility->Reduce Transparency, and make sure its not turned on.
