ripping dvd to itunes

I have a homemade dvd from a reel of old family films, I would like to make copies for sisters, apple says iTunes can't rip a dvd but it can burn it how do I get the dvd to iTunes?Im using Mac os Sierra

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

iTunes can't burn a video format DVD, i.e. the kind you would put into a TV player. That requires special authoring software.


iTunes can't rip DVDs. With a home DVD you can simply drag the contents of the DVD to your hard drive, then use software such as the free Handbrake to convert it to a computer friendly format. Select .mp4 format (but iTunes will probably want it with the extension .m4a which you can do by simple renaming).
