IOS 12 - worth it (stable) yet?

Hi All,

I have an iPhone 6 which I've been very happy with, still running 11.3.1 - I've avoided 11.4 so far because of complaints about the battery draining faster under that version (my battery is still performing at peak capacity, 96% still).

I've been really cautious of upgrading to the "initial" version of a new OS in the past, so that bugs (like that battery one in 11.4) are worked out first, but the performance improvements in 12 really have me wanting to upgrade, so I wanted to ask how this initial release of 12 is for those that have upgraded - any major issues? Should I hold off for now?

Thanks for any feedback.

J.

iOS 12 is a definite performance boost, especially on older hardware. Except for a scattering of "the new iOS killed my battery" complaints that's common with any update, there have been no significant reports of reduced battery life running iOS 12. If your battery health is below 80%, you need to get your battery replaced, regardless of what version of iOS you're running.

I've suffered no stability problems at all and press reports from early this summer even indicated that the early betas were more stable than iOS 11.4.

Just a quick update (though I don't know if this will stay up as posts seem to disappear for no reason some times) - I did do the upgrade over the weekend, and since then so far so good - it is a bit snappier than it was under 11, and not major issues noticed so far.

Having said that, remember that my phone is still in 'peak performance' mode. Also just because I didn't get any issues yet doesn't mean there won't be any; someone not complaining here doesn't mean there aren't problems out there, and with hundreds of millions of iOS users world wide, even 0.5% having problems still accounts for a large number of users.

Someone not complained on here doesn’t mean there are any problems or issues either. You cannot rationally argue something exists when you have no evidence of it at all.

My point about Internet forums being an inherently biased sampling is that people typically join and post because they do have an issue and are seeking a solution. Those without issues are more likely to never even visit sites like this. Hence issues posted about here don’t provide an unbiased sample of the extent of any issue. Something may be a big deal, or it may affect a tiny proportion of users - but there is no reliable way to say just from internet support forum posts.

There's plenty of other sites, sites like macintouch with valuable user experience information (both good and bad) so just because YOU think people would only post on this forum about any experience doesn't make it the only place that will have that information. And on those sites posts don't disappear for dubious reasons.

Speaking of posts disappearing I find it odd that 3 days later your pointless and nonrelevant reply complaining about my comment is still up when a post of mine in another thread got removed within minutes. I guess we'll see if this post stays up or not how much of a #doublestandard there is with Apple on here.

I don‘t even understand what your going on about in this thread? You mention no reported issue with iOS 12. You yourself say you‘re not experiencing any, those responding say they‘ve not experienced any issues with iOS 12? So if you have no issue with iOS 12, I have no issue with iOS 12, the other responders have no issue with iOS 12, what is it, exactly, you’re bent out of shape over? What is this thread even about now?

And I stand by what I said. People have issues with any and every operating system ever made. That’s universal. But Internet forum posts are neither an unbiased nor quantifiable measure of the actual extent of an issue. Simple sampling statistics - voluntary Internet forum posts are not a reliable measure of the extent any issue.

I never had any issues with 11.4, nor 11.4.1 nor now 12 on an iPhone 7, 12.9” (first gen) iPad Pro, new 10” iPad Pro, and older iPad Air2.

Updating or not is up to you. Just remember for every issue raised here or elsewhere online, there will be literally millions of other adopters around the globe with no issues. Not discounting the issues some people have, but with hundreds of millions of iOS users world wide, complaints on the internet are not even remotely an unbiased sample of user experiences.
