BMW iDrive refuses to play Apple Radio

I have a 2014 BMW 435i running MN-002.039.071, and it absolutely refuses to play any apple radio stations with iOS 12. UNLESS I completely shut the car off, then select a new apple radio station, let it play through a bit of a song, and then start the car back up. Is this a feature?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that you're unable to play Apple Radio Stations without having to turn off the car. I may be able to help. Use this article as a reference for some steps that may help you with this: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod doesn't connect to or work in your car I would also check to see if your car manufacturer has a firmware update.
