Is there a way to turn of the anotation software for students when they open a PDF?

When I post an assignment in iTunes U in PDF format the kids open it up on their iPads and it automatically goes to the annotation software within iTunes U. The kids then have to swipe up with 2 fingers to move down to page 60, etc. Is there a way to turn this off so that it just opens the PDF without the annotation? When I open it on my iPad it is this way. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
