Sync iPhone 6s and iPad air over iTunes

Recently whenever i have wanted to connect either my iPhone 6s or my iPad air to iTunes on my MacBook Air i get a notification saying that in order to connect them I must install some new piece of software. This does not appear as an update anywhere else. Is it a approved apple update of not? At the same time both my devices will not connect to iTunes via USB only by WiFi sync. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPad, iOS 6.1.4

Download the current 12.8 installer for iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.

Unlock your iOS device and connect it to USB.

Install iTunes from the .dmg that you've downloaded.

Near the end of the installation it should announce that a further software update is required.

Install that and iTunes should see your devices.

Or wait for Apple to release iTunes 12.9 for Mac.
