m4p and m4a

Several of my Purchased Albums have INCOMPLETE Songs and I found that these 'missing' songs are still in m4p, while those listed in 'Purchased' are in m4a. Because of this, my music servers (Wadia & Roon) cannot find these m4p songs - only my MacMini using iTunes 12.8.0.x can play them. Still, even in iTunes, these purchased albums show incomplete songs. I tried deleting the albums and redownloading but all I got were the same incomplete listing: worse, I even lost at least 1 Album (Coldplay Ghost Stories - still listed as purchased but all I get is the booklet). HELP please

hi Ed: I did read somewhere that these m4p User uploaded file

'should not be there now', but they are: these m4p files 'are missing' in the albums I purchased as they just 'stay' in Apple Music rather than going into my 'Music' folder... this is disappointing and tiring.

I will follow the CD Burning and Ripping and report back.

TIA,

Please excuse me for these images, but I just want to show you what is happening to my AM... top photo shows the Album (Eat Your Greens) has 10 songs as displayed in the AM Album view; below is the same album in the PURCHASED view with song 3 missing. I get this kind of results for all purchased albums; the worse is that there are DUPLICATES that when I delete or remove, the duplicated song is also 'gone'... I am thinking of rebuilding my iTunes Library but I am not confident on doing it 😟

Hi,

Do you have Apple Music? I see that you are highlighting music in the Apple Music folder. This is where Apple music downloads are placed and as such have DRM which can’t be converted.

Hello everyone: Thanks for all your suggestions. I decided to get hold of some experts in apple chat and we have started working on my problem — but it is far from over. I shall be reconnecting with them later and see what happens next. so far...

  1. we started redownloading at least 2 of my purchased albums and they seem to work; but we also found out that the problem with my MacMini Music Server is not the same with my IOS Devices - these devices have other issues with my Apple Music and those purchased albums from iTunes;
  2. my iTune in my MacMini keeps on crashing now 😮😠
  3. I haven't heard any reference of DRM and non-DRM yet, though I mentioned some of the files are in m4p, others in m4a

I will update this once I get a clear solution.

Egayzd,

TBOMK, Apple has not sold downloads in .m4p since 2009. Make sure that what you are looking at are not just Apple Music tracks.

If they are indeed downloaded audio files in .m4p, you have a few options for getting non-protected versions. (1) You can burn to audio CD and rip back. (2) If there are just a few, you can purchase fresh copies. (3) Or, as mentioned, you can use iTunes Match to get non-protected versions. In the document I linked, see the section on "To upgrade your music to iTunes Plus, follow these steps on your computer."

Per your other question, iTunes Match is not a "necessity." If you go with option 3, you do need it. However, once you have the upgraded files, you do not have to renew it, you can just keep using the files.

Hi Jim: yes, I have been an Apple Music subscriber for the past 2 years; I also tried a 1 year iTunes Match subscription but I did not renew last year because I did not see much value for it at my current need. Yes, I do realize that all AM downloads goes to the "Apple Music" folder; and I also noted that when I purchase an album, that purchase goes into my "Music" folder - both folders are in the iTunes Media folder. However, I noticed that my Roon and Wadia Music Servers could not 'find' all these AM Purchases: what would display are just some of the songs from a purchased album and the rest are just 'not there'... so I did some investigations and found that even in iTunes, those purchased albums do not show all the songs; this is when I found out that those that do not display remained m4p and stayed in the AM folder, those that do display became m4a and goes into the "Music" folder... I am naturally confused and disappointed (to say it lightly): I bought those albums so they can be played elsewhere (other than by iTunes) but I am not getting that expectation.

I did some internet search and found suggestions like 'deleting & redownloading' those purchases but all I got were the same results - some m4p, some m4a.

What further confused me was that when I investigate each song from a Purchases Album, ALL of these would actually show "Purchased" but would either be in the "AM" folder or in the "Music" folder. This is crazy.

Perhaps, yourself and those reading may have a different experience?

While I like iTunes as a player (and I extensively use it in my car), I also want to play those purchase albums - complete - in my Wadia Music Server or using players like Roon, Audirvana, etc. AND DEFINITELY, I like them to completely show in iTunes, too.

Thanks for your assistance.

hmm, this is new to me, tt2: in fact, i also noticed I am getting a lot of duplicates of the songs in the albums I've purchased 😮. Could you kindly tell me exactly how to do this? As I said in my posts - I have tried deleting the purchased albums and then redownloading, yet all i get are the same results, i.e incomplete albums or those with a lot of duplicates 😟

Hi,

If you download AM tracks then purchase them, you need to make sure that you have deleted the AM them download the purchased version.

You need to delete the Apple Music version. Create smart playlist based on iCloud Status = "Apple Music" or Kind = "Apple Music AAC Audio file". Delete the AM tracks that you have purchased from iTunes store. Then you can redownload purchased track. They will have iCloud Status = "Purchased" and Kind = "Purchased AAC Audio File"
