Apple Watch 3/Watchos 5 - Swimming not counting laps or calories correctly.

I have an Apple Watch 3, and just updated to WatchOS 5 yesterday. Today during my swim workout, the yardage counting is completely off - I swam 6500 yards, and it shows 100 yards. The calories burned are about 4-500 different than normal, the auto sets are completely wrong/missing as well as times and everything. Is there a bug with the new watchOS and swimming? Anyone else have this issue? I swim the exact same distance/time 5 days a week and the Apple Watch workout app has always been extremely consistent in measuring distance, time, strokes, etc. I count my laps and the Apple Watch historically always got it exactly right. Now today, after watchos 5 update, it's not even close.

Thanks,

Andy

I called Apple support and they helped me solve the problem. It turns out that force quitting the app, powering off and restarting the watch and then unpairing and re-pairing the watch fixed it. It counted correctly yesterday.

In reality, I think the in pairing and re-pairing is what worked but I listed everything they had me do just in case it was some arcane detail in the sequence.

Had this exact problem and resting the watch like this worked for me - thank you

This was the solution -

First,

I force quit the workout app - open the work out app on your watch, hold down

the watch button until the “power off” screen appears, release the side button

and push and hold the Digital Crown until the app closes.

Next,

I force reset the watch. Hold down both the side button and the Digital Crown

together until the screen goes blank and then you see the Apple logo. Release

when you see the Apple logo.

After

doing those both last night and then swimming again this morning, all swimming

activity tracking was back to normal.

Ok, Mine worked again this morning, the right way. Here’s what I did last night before swimming this morning. Not sure if this was what fixed it for me, but worth a try to see if it fixes it for everyone else too.

Good luck!

I received 5.1.1 the other day and updated to it and went swimming tonight and my iWatch 3 finally worked great again. It has taken over a month, but for as many billions a dollars Apple makes in profits every year, I really think the programmers should make sure it works as advertised and perform more testing before they send out upgrades. I love my watch for swimming when it works right. So whoever fixed the software, thank you.

Same issue here on series 3 with os 5.2.1

Not displaying laps or distance right, either shows 0, way behind or unhelpfully starts me about 1600m in! When I end workout and sync it sorts itself out!

Phoned apple about this in May, they made me force close, force reset iPhone and watch, unpair watch and re-pair from scratch. Fixed it for 3 swims (been mainly cycling and walking recently). Today went to use it and the same issue occurred.

They wanted me to go go through the same steps again but I insisted they repair it instead and now getting an express repair (replacement sent out with box to send mine back).

Apple are still not recognising this as an issue as it doesn’t show up on the analytics reports. Really not on and very much considering putting my money into a Garmin watch instead as I can’t deal with something that doesn’t work as it should when there is no willingness to sort out the problem!

I too have had this issue, not displaying any laps during swim (but for me accurately showing the laps at the end on the summary screen). I have a series 3 with 5.0.1. After reading there is a new IOS version, 5.1.1, I am downloading it as I type this. I won’t be able to test for several days due to travel, but the previous post indicated that this fixed the issue (for him). If you are on 5.0.1, I suggest you consider updating the software.

That’s great! Interestingly enough, my watch (series 3) was perfect UNTIL I updated to 5.1.1 After the update, no activity tracking worked, NOTHING. Not stand, move goal, and none of the workouts. Called support and they had me update my phone to 12.1 and restart my watch and that did the trick. Not sure why the phone’s iOS would have anything to do with the watch’s activity tracking but who knows. I agree though, it’s crazy to think a new release would cause so many problems. Glad it’s back and working for ya now!

I had the same problem as a few others in this thread: my Series 4 was working fine until a few days ago. I noticed it didn't seem to be counting my laps as I was swimming them, but the end-of-workout summary was correct. I followed a few of the posted suggestions yesterday: force quit the workout app, force restart the watch & update the OS (5.2.1). Not sure which thing did the trick, but my watch was counting laps just fine this morning. Hope this helps!

Hi are you still having the same fault

I contacted apple today for a 3rd time and they took some readings off my watch over Wi-fi and couldn’t find a fault with the watch itself.

He said it’s possibly a software fault surprise there, he has past my reading on to a different team to look at all the info and will come back to me in 4 days maximum.

In the meantime he suggested that more people need to contact Apple via the apple support app to register this fault as it will help.

Cheers Andy.
