How can I turn off notifications during a call and while viewing videos using my iPhone X with IOS 12?

Is there a way to turn off all notifications (banner and alert sound) during a call (voice and Facetime) and while viewing videos? The alert sound drowns out my caller and the temporary banner obstructs a portion of the screen while watching a video clip. I want to receive notifications all other times just not while on a call or while I’m viewing a video.

I know there is a mode called 'Do Not Disturb', is that the best way to do this? Can I activate that mode before the phone call? Ideally I would like to be able to turn on the appropriate mode one hour before the phone call but I would need to be sure that the desired phone call will not get filtered and that the phone will actually ring when the person will call me.
