USB is not the way to go. This is how to do it:
Connect the analog out from the Hi8 camera to an Analog/DV converter (DV cams often can do this) and then firewire from the converter to the computer.
Set FCP capture to NON-CONTROLLABLE DEVICE.
Start the Hi8 camera running then use CAPTURE NOW in FCP.
Make sure you have set a time limit in Capture settings. Sometimes FCP will try to allocate your entire capture scratch drive as the capture file and lock the system.
