Update iPad Mini 2 on iOS 9 to iOS 12

Hi,

I have an iPad Mini 2 (ME276NF/A) still running on iOS 9.2.1.

When I go to the 'Software Update' section in Settings, it finds the iOS 12 update, but it tells me I can't download and install it, instead the iPad needs to be connected to iTunes in order to update.

I have iTunes 12.2 and when I connect the iPad and 'check for updates' under 'summary', it says the iPad is up to date and there's nothing to update..

Weird, because the iPad itself told me that iOS 12 was available.

Anyone have an idea?

SOLVED! The solution was to hold the Home and Power buttons down while connected by cable to iTunes. Don't stop holding the buttons until it comes up with an image of a cable connection. Then iTunes will give a message that the iPad needs to be restored because there's a problem. Say you want to continue with the restore, and it will download and install the latest iOS.

NOTE: Be sure to create a backup in iTunes first!

NOTE: This works with anniPad Mini 2 which is supported! Performance seems really good, too.

I have a similar problem. My iPad Mini 2 is running iOS 9.2.1. On the iPad, it says I need to use iTunes on a computer to update to iOS 12. I'm running the latest iTunes (12.8.0.150) on a MacBook Air with High Sierra. When I do this, a message pops up to Download or Download and Update. The Update option does nothing, but the Download option did download the file to my hard drive (File is iPad_64bit_12.0.1_16A404_Restore.ipsw).

When I click the Update button or the Restore Ipad button, nothing happens. No messages or progress gas tank or anything. I've rebooted both devices multiple times.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you have an iPad Mini (i.e., not an iPad Mini 2 or later), you cannot update to iOS 12/12.1. The minimum hardware requirement for update to iOS 12 is a device with an Apple A7 64-bit processor.

The last supported major version of iOS for the original iPad Mini (not Mini 2/3/4) was iOS 9 - so, I believe, 9.3.5 is as far as it’ll go. Sorry :-(
