The icon for Settings and Preferences is invisible on my dock. There's a space where it should be and if I click on it, it opens up. The Icon shows up under applications. It always returns if I drag it off the dock. And if I try to drag it to the dock from the applications folder, it doesn't change.

I fixed this. Right-click on the missing icon and chose options --> remove from dock. After restarting the mac, the invisible icon was gone from the dock. I was then able to drag the the system preferences from the applications folder. The icon now shows up.
