Updating Apple tv 5.3??

Is it still possilble to update apple tv box version 5.3?


I keep getting "The AppleTV update couldn't be downloaded at this time. Try again later" wen I hit the software update button....

That would be a 2nd Gen, which is considered obsolete. It isn’t clear as to whether the firmware is still available for that model.


You can try updating again, making sure DNS is set to auto (settings-general-network) and rebooting ATV and router and/or doing a restore. However, if any issue occurs there wouldn’t be any support.

Apple TV Software 5.3 (2013-06) was available for the Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation). The Apple TV (2nd generation) could be updated to Apple TV Software 6.2.1 (2014-09). The Apple TV (3rd generation) could be updated to Apple TV Software 7.2.2 (2016-12).


The document HT202716 still mentions (in small print) updating these models, so I suppose it should still be possible and available. Apple usually reflects changes in availability in these support documents.
