Error trying to open source media file

I've been getting this error message a lot lately. I drag a known good .mp4 file into Compressor (ver. 4.4.1) it will display this: (Error trying to open source media file) error message. I can take that same file and import it into FCPX (ver. 10.4.3) without incident.

Any suggestions?

iMac with Retina 5K display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 4 GHz i7, 32 GB RAM, R9 M295X
