Hey Ayad,

I found a solution!

I wanted to try it before sharing. I followed the steps here:

OWC Knowledge base

Upon installing the firmware utility app. The app name is 'MarvellTray' and that gets installed in your Applications folder. Follow the steps on that knowledge base. After confirming the new firmware version, run the Mojave Installation again.

Let me know if this works for you, too!

The whole point is exactly to be able to install OsX 10.14 directly on the OWC drive. I did not use the original Apple SSD in any way. I downloaded the firmware update utility from OWC's website and run it. Once the firmware of the OWC SSD was updated, I just launched the Mojave installer (not even booting the Mac from the Mojave installer, but just double-clicking it while OsX 10.13 was running). Before updating the SSD's firmware, when I launched the Mojave installer it did start, but when it came to selecting the HD on which to install the update, the drive was not available because of being a "third party" drive. After running the OWC's firmware update, the drive became available and I could install 10.14 directly on OWC's drive.

Ayad,

here is a message sent to me email by a tech at OWC yesterday when I was having these problems installing mojave on my macbook pro with OWC SSD 1tb installed. I was chatting with him using an app and he sent me a link that had this message on it:

Aura for 2013 Mac Pro: 10.13.4 and Later Install Issue

Created on: July 2, 2018

Last Updated June 27, 2018

Relevant Part Numbers:

  • OWCSSDA13MP1.0(K)
  • OWCSSDA13MP2.0(K)
  • OWCSSDA13MP4.0(K)

Please note that currently, it is not possible to install macOS 10.13.4 or later onto a new Aura for Mac Pro, using the standard macOS installer process. This includes upgrading from 10.12 or earlier using the App Store.

This issue is not specific to OWC hardware. The host computer requires an internal drive with an EFI partition that is compatible with this specific OS and later versions. If the host does not detect this specific setup, the installed drive will be visible in the installer, but not available as a target disk. In the case of the Aura SSD, the host sees this as an external drive, rather than an internal drive. Apple is aware of this issue but we do not have an ETA for a potential fix.

In the meantime, there are two workarounds that we can recommend:

  1. If you have a stand-alone installer for macOS 10.13.3 or earlier (for example on a USB thumb drive), you CAN use the normal installation process with your Aura SSD.
  2. If you do not have an installer for 10.13.3 or earlier version of macOS, it is possible to install 10.13.4 or later using the macOS Disk Utility Restore function (steps below). At this time we do not recommend third party cloning apps.

System Restore Steps

  1. If your Apple SSD has not been updated to 10.13 or later yet, back up your drive then update the system to 10.13.x as a first step, using the App Store 'Updates' process.
  2. Shut down your Mac Pro, then disconnect the power cable and all peripherals.
  3. Install your new Aura SSD into the Mac Pro according to the installation manual or video.
  4. Install the Apple SSD with 10.13.4 or later into the included OWC Envoy Pro enclosure.
  5. Boot to the macOS volume in the Envoy Pro enclosure.
  6. Open Disk Utility.
  7. Format the Aura SSD as a APFS volume.
  8. Right-Click on the Aura SSD's new APFS volume (not the container disk), then choose the 'Restore' option from the pop-up menu.
  9. In the dialog that appears, choose the macOS volume in the OWC Envoy (not the container disk). Click 'Restore.'

After the process is complete, you should be able to restart the system and boot to your new Aura SSD.

Ayad I tried this and it did not work. I tried installing on a 64gb usb flash drive as instructed above and the os would not install to it . . the msg 'mac os can't be installed because a 3rd party storage installed is not compatible.' blah blah blah. It should have worked but did not so I think the problem lies with apple and their software. Let's wait and see if they fix this . . . AND I HOPE THEY DO . . THEY HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO DO fix it.

It's no OWC's problem. So anyway give it a shot ayad and let us know if you can succeed where I failed.

I don't know why you don't see the device under adapter. I have just downloaded the tool, run it, and it updated the firmware of the SSD (which is a OWC). The OS I was running was High Sierra. Once the update was done, I just run the OsX Mojave installer (which I had previously downloaded and burned onto a USB drive). I didn't even booted the Mac from the USB drive, just double-clicked on it while High Sierra was running.

What happened previously was that the Mojave installer started, but when I had to select the drive onto which the update was to be done (in other words, the MacintoshHD), the drive was shown as opaque, and not selectable, and the message said it was not possible to use this drive as it was a third party drive.

After running the OWC firmware update, I could select that drive normally, and the installation of Mojave went on smoothly.

Which OsX are you running now? Maybe the trick works only for a one-step upgrade (from High Sierra to Mojave), or maybe the OWC firmware update is not compatible with the OsX you are running, if that is a bit older.

I don't think anyone can solutions to that. I connect twice time with OWC technology services. They do not have any firmware to update OWC Aura Pro X SSD firmware. Thats mean this SSD can't compatibility with OS X 10.14 Mojave. So that's reason why i won't wake up from sleep since replaced SSD. I have to restart all the time. Thats really horrible. And right now i have to return this SSD. I have been try reset PRAM, SMC, reinstall OS X and so on. Nothing can change this happened. I order Transcend Jetdrive 855 SSD for my MacBook pro with retina display 2013 late. Mac blog and some other website talking about OWC AURA PRO X SSD, they thought Transcend be better than OWC. that's even costs more. Hope you guys can find new way to solved this problems.

Ayad,

I have this exact same problem however I do not believe that the problem lies with my OWC SSD. I tried installed mojave to a usb flash drive and received the exact same error message as you read so I doubt the problem lies with the hardware. I believe it is something within the software itself. After I installed my newly purchased OWC SSD I installed high sierra but found I didn't like it to I downgraded back to sierra. Now when I tried earlier this morn to install high sierra I was unable to do so. . the error message you typed was the error msg I was given. So I don't think the problem is the hardware . . something changed from high sierra 10.13.1 to 10.13.6 that made installing it impossible. I did speak with 3 apple techs last night and the last gentlemen I spoke with the baffled by this problem. He told me he'd look into it and I hope to keep in contact with him so that I can learn if and when a fix is created.

OWC is not at fault here I think, it's apple that has done something to the software.

Now my macbook pro 13 in retina early 2015 is back to sierra and it runs fine. I'll just have to wait and see what fix apple can make for this problem. Mojave should have installed on a usb flash drive 64 gb but didn't. . that tells me it's not my SSD.

I suggest you go back to sierra or whatever until a fix is made.

Alfonso
