iPhone Xs Max Speaker Issues - Mono/Stereo

I just got my Xs Max couple of days ago, and when I was playing a song through Spotify, I noticed it was only playing through one channel. The song that was playing was missing the lead guitar riff. I tried looking in Spotify settings for any mono/stereo options, but nothing. I also looked through iOS settings regards to the speakers, but nothing.

Any feedback would be great, thanks in advance!

This guy did the exact same thing; https://youtu.be/cWWe1qN5Xvw he got a new replacement and it started doing the same thing even though he had taken his original one to the apple store and they ran their diagnostic tests and it came back with a speaker and mic problem which indicates hardware issues so they replaced it on the spot...

Then with his replacement the same thing started to happen... so either you’re this YouTube guy or this guy got two faulty handsets too .

After seeing the YouTube video and knowing that this guy has been through two iPhone XS Max’s with the same problem, I’m thinking it is a software issue.

If the top front speaker didn't work at all, it would be a hardware issue. The fact almost everyone who has this issue is able to return to stereo sound simply by a restart or reboot means this is absolutely a software issue. Apple will fix this.

So, I never reply to these threads.... I usually just read and then self diagnosing is my thing—calls to Apple are a last resort. Anyway, I noticed this issue two days ago, and just realized today what was actually taking place. I noticed that when I was watching YouTube and would rotate the the phone for landscape mode, that the stereo channel separation would occur, but only one channel was outputting sound!! I read of the issue tonight on a website which includes a YouTube video—that is mentioned above, and that shows a guy having the same issues with his XS Max. I restarted my phone and it has subsided for now. This definitely seems like a software issue, but for $1,249 US DOLLARS PLUS 7% TAX, I expect not to be having these issues, and also I will not accept a repair, or a refurbished—“new device”. Not with all money JUST spent! This is crazy. Get it together Apple! Charging issues, display color temp issues, and now sound/speaker issues?! I am LIVID! I have had every iPhone since the 4S, multiple devices, don’t make me regret my choices to support this company all of these years! Guaranteed to have spent 25k+ on iPhones in six years. A repair to a brand new, top tier, expensive device, is unacceptable. A smack in the face to your customers—an insult.

I’m having the same problem with my XS Max as well a rebot will fix it but after a rebot the problem will occur again. This is my second XS Max my first issue was the charge gate issue it wouldn’t charge while my phone was asleep. I went to the Apple store and they exchanged my phone for a new one but now my new phone is experiencing this front speaker problem while listening to music or YouTube videos. Please Apple fix this. I hope this isn’t a hardware problem. This is my 2nd replacement and I’m getting frustrated, it’s an expensive phone and I hate the frustration going to the Apple store to do an exchange.

I’m having the same issue with my XS Max. A reboot will fix the problem, but the problem will occur again in a couple hours. This is my 2nd replacement phone, my first issue with this phone was the “charge gate” issue I went to the apple store and they exchanged my phone and now my 2nd replacement is having issues with the front top speaker. YouTube videos or anything with music and even FaceTime calls the front top speaker would stop working until a reboot, but it will occur again . Please apple fix this problem, I’m so frustrated with this problem. I’m frustrated going to the apple store for my Xs problems this is an expensive phone. I had apple since the iPhone 4 and I never had problems like this. I hope this isn’t a hardware problem. To anyone with a solution please leave a comment or if iOS 12.1. Beta fixes this please also leave a comment. Please apple this is a expensive device please fix this problem and please listen to your loyal customers. I love apple products but it’s sad that I’m having issues with my expensive iPhone.

Yes it does fit it! I had the same problem rebooting it will fix it for a day or so. After updating it has been about a week with no issues at all! Screen color got better also. All you have to do to update is go on safari and type “apple beta” follow the steps. You don’t have nothing to loose and all to gain... plus your phone will run more smooth

Top speaker not working again. This needs to be addressed by apple. Paid 1600 for this phone. And I noticed one of my posts was deleted. Whyyy

I’ll just wait for the official iOS 12.1 rolls out.

Are you sure this is good idea to wait final release? It can take weeks or even a month.

My experience: for past day (20 hours of operation) speaker never bugged. What has changed in my work with the device? I did not take portrait pictures and did not edit the photo with depth of field. And did not connect bluetooth headsets and speakers (no necessity) though Airdrop was in active use.

I suppose neural network causes this bug.

I suggest to all who suffers this bug also examine your devices and maybe even record everything new launching on your device from the moment when you turned it on in the morning. After using new application or function (new this day), check the speaker. More than 50 people here have been noted this problem. This is a sufficient auditory to identify the cause and pattern of the bug. Thus, we will help both ourselves and Apple to solve the problem faster. If speaker bug occurs often, I propose to install beta version 12.1 to confirm or deny problem existence.

Mine has been functioning since yesterday’s restart as well. However, due to the amount of people who say that it could happen again—I placed two tickets with an AppleCare Senior Advisor around 11:30PM ET yesterday. (I got an Advisor in Australia.) I detailed the issue with the speaker/sound, and was sent a link with case number where I can reply with a photo or video of the issue if it happens again. She basically stated that I should keep an eye on it, and if it happens again—capture it, call in, and they can pull my logs which will then be sent up to engineering. I also noticed that I’m having an issue with my WiFi disconnecting when the phone sleeps, and also the WiFi reception is in and out—ranging from 2-3 bars consistently. I have an 8 Plus and an X which is not, and has not ever done that. So, that has a ticket open also, and I am to monitor that as well. Here’s to hoping an iOS update solves all of this soon!

Just one comment to your post. Your iPhone is supposed to disconnect temporarily from Wifi when your phone sleeps. This is expected and normal behavior. As soon as it wakes up, it's supposed to reconnect. If your phone isn't reconnecting upon wakeup, that would be an issue. But during sleep, Wifi should't be active (w.ith the exception of performing a backup when your screen is locked and your iPhone is plugged in).

Hmmm—I’m not aware of that being the case. To clarify, my phone was on the wireless charger, playing Apple Music over WiFi, and I woke it to change the song where it had then displayed LTE—rather than WiFi. My other two iPhone 8 Plus, and X do not do this, as I commonly charge wirelessly while streaming music on speaker. I have an unlimited data plan, but still would prefer that my music be streamed over my home WiFi as with my other devices. The advisor also didn’t indicate that this was normal behavior....considering the circumstances.
