Problems upgrading to macOS Mojave on MacBook Pro 2018

As macOS Mojave was released today, I thought I would try to upgrade my 15" MacBook Pro 2018 to the latest software. However, when I'm running the installer, after around 2-3 minutes I get an error message that a problem has occurred, with no solution in sight. I have tried to reboot, turn it on and off, updated without internet etc etc, nothing works. This is the error message I'm getting (in Swedish):

It seems that many people have gotten confirmation from Apple that this is an issue with the T2 chip.

I would STRONGLY advice you to stay on whatever OS you are running now, do NOT try to install Mojave or reinstall the OS you are running. Even the people who have gotten it to work are experiencing several bugs with Mojave. If I were you, I would wait until Apple releases a patch for the OS so that it works with the new MBP:s. Thanks for all the insight everyone!

armwood, did they by chance say which make and model of iMacs were having issues?

Out of this bunch I have a late 2015 27" that upgraded but dmauch has a 2017, and has issues. Just wondering if there is any kind of pattern surfacing yet ? In this thread I've seen more newer Macs, but also the 2012 that have had issues, beyond that on the other threads I've watched one being people being able to upgrade, but having issues with the App Store include different models. This and the other thread are the only two I watch here though.

Right, I wouldn't assume otherwise, but I'm thinking you did it through High Sierra each time, then tried the install from there. The App Store issues I mentioned were from users on Mojave, they couldn't connect at all, or other number of issues. But they were working OK on HS. I even checked with them to see if it was just Mojave, or iOS 12 as well, and one person got back to me and said it was just the Mac, and the iPhone had no issues with the App Store.

Excellent point about TM backups. I think anyone having trouble with Mojave should clean install Mojave and not use any sort of migration assistant or restore from backup.

If Mojave works properly on a clean machine then something is corrupted on the backups that is only causing problems in Mojave.

When I was talking about Mojave being problematic for some individual machines, I meant that everyone installs different stuff on theirs. Some use 3rd party apps which may modify system files. Some are running pirated software which may patch some stuff. Anything that isn’t official or legit can cause problems on Apple hardware. Remember this is not Windows where you can install just about anything without conflict. Apple introduces and removes stuff with every OS release and what worked in High Sierra may break something in Mojave.

Start off with a clean installation and setup as if you were unboxing the machine. Install some apps from the Mac App Store if you need any and see if there are any problems. If not I would manually transfer backed up files over and not use a time machine backup.

I know this is time consuming and frustrating for those with hundreds of GBs if not more of stuff but it will pay off in the end.

If not simply wait for 10.14.1 which should be out by the end of October if not sooner, which may or may not fix some incompatibility causing issues.

As much as I like your explanation, I still believe there is something screwy here if the Migration or TM work flawlessly with HS ( many times now ). if the contents of the TM backup is at issue I firmly believe there would be a large gaggle ( don't want to use specific numbers or estimates or I will get nailed here ) that would be in the same boat. I have nothing but approved license software, nothing exotic on this machine. My Tm does not hav e any 32 bit software.

I know that it doesn’t make sense that what works in High Sierra doesn’t for Mojave. I’m just perplexed by this problem on brand new, 2 month old macs! If these problems were on a 2012 or 2013 rMBP I would understand.

But if a fresh install works without using a backup, then it must be the backup. I don’t know what else it could be. I wish we all could get together and attempt solving these problems in person but of course that isn’t possible.

I like solving these problems. I think most of us on these forums do.

...or 4 month old 27” iMacs. So let me ask this. If I have a TM backup on my WD Passport for Mac, but went ahead and erased my entire hard disk and then tried a clean install of Mohave, I might not encounter the problems? How then would I get all of my files and apps back onto the Mohave OS? May be a supid question with an easy answer ...but Ive grown weary at this point as well.

I am amazed by the number of people 'wrestling' with trying to get Mojave to work. If this was Microsoft Windows I could understand it. Personally, I don't want to be switching this off, tweaking this and that setting. Apple is 'press install' and it happens, period. It installs on my late 2013 iMac, however it is unusable, the bluetooth mouse doesn't work and it hangs every 5 seconds, presumably looking for some hardware. Not Apple's finest hour. I'll stick with High Sierra until Apple release a statement of intent.

dmauch, that was part of my point yesterday, and I apologize if you confused my comment along with Robin's.

I was mainly trying to say two things as nicely as possible without stepping on toes.

1. Was, ever since Steve passed away, I find Apple hard to take serious sometimes, with some of what they say and come up with now.

2. With all the bad information online, and the internet trolls, it's also hard to know who to take seriously there as well.

Wasn't intentionally trying to minimize anyone's problems at all. Just speaking from the experiences I've had personally and have talked to people I've known for a while, and of course my mother's experience.

When it comes to customer service, whenever I've had to communicate with Apple, I've had good experiences.

FYI, I do have my A+ certification, and have had some experience in computer repair. I just never got Apple certified because I don't know enough Mac users to make the cost worth it. The main reason I still use Apple products though is:

A: they still offer the best accessibility for special needs (though other platforms are much better now)

B: I'm so used to the software, and investing in a new platform beyond hardware, is not something I'm looking forward to (just yet.)
