When texting how does the bubble change

When I am texting back and forth with someone I noticed on the iMessage that the bubble changed to a different font a black drawing like bubble rather than the cloud like bubble When you are waiting on a response from someone... what does that mean and why is that?

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 12
