trying to understand this error and why. the imei goes missing and only can see the apple serial number. Try to restore in apple configurator and gives activation error. Help

FYI: A missing IMEI is usually indicative of a critical failure, often caused by attempts to jailbreak. If that's the case, it's unrepairable. The phone will have to be replaced.
Tried everything listed in here. The device, a number of them, so no imei after update. Put in recovery mode and still doesn't resolve. This is message get when trying to update, wipe, and recover in Apple Configurator as well.
