I can't find the Erase icon (pencil with erasure?) on Affinity Designer on the left-hand side of the program. There is no Affinity community, but I had to pick something, so I chose Aperture.

The set of tools in Affinity and Affnity Designer depends on the persona you are currently in. I am seeing the pecil with eraser in the tools on the left side, when I am using the Pixel Persona, but not, when I am using the Draw persona.

There are 3 personas in AD nonetheless: Vector, Pixel & Export.
Are you sure you are not mistaking EXPORT persona for Vector (The funky triangle icon).
Pixel P. has a paintbrush & an eraser brush.
Vector has a pencil tool & Vector brush. The trash can is your delete.
On the desktop this is called DRAW, Pixel & Export,
whereas on the iPad it is VECTOR, Pixel & Export.
There are manuals on the Affinity site.
It is structured differently enough from Adobe Illustrator to need to visit the manuals.

I was puzzled by your comment - I read it as an additional question, which seemed odd. Got it now.
I know you answered the OP, but...
1) There is a forum for Affinity Designer.
2) There is no vector eraser tool. (see link)
What puzzles me is the choice of Aperture forum.
Illustrator CS4 still works marginally on 10.x (Just loaded Mojave & is untested there). I usually get desperate & walk a graphic over to Illustrator, Graphic, or ClipStudio when necessary. The Affinity interface is a pain to get used to, even if one doesn't like Illustrator's quirks overmuch. The omission of some of the more useful standard features is inconvenient. But all that is a discussion for their forum vs here.

I meant Affinity Designer on the Mac.
Maybe the eraser tool is looking differently in the DRAW persona, but it is missing from the sidebar, when I am using this persona. I just checked again.
In the DRAW persona I am seeing this:
The different personae with different sets of tools are the main reason, why I rarely ever use any of the Affinity products; I am using them only, if there is no help for it.
