Pull down on the top-right corner to see the battery percentage in the Control Center.

It can get confusing sometime when multiple people post. You are correct in coming to the forum to get answers. The answer to your question was provided that you cannot. You access the battery percentage by pulling down the Control Center, and that is the only place it appears. There is not enough physical space to display it on the status bar, and Apple does not provide a way to customize those settings. The future features like was the name the other poster put on the feedback link that I provided earlier. You may use it as well if you wish to let Apple know that you would like to see a change.
You are not addressing Apple here, this is a user to user support forum and Apple does not participate here. The battery percentage is not displayed on the iPhone X or higher series of iPhones due to the lack of space in the status bar. There just isn't enough room. If you wish to let Apple know that you do not like this, then use this link, https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
I just got a new iphone xs max today and I am stunned that I cannot have something as simple as the percentage always in the corner, just like I've had it for years and years now. Why am I not allowed to make that choice for myself, Apple? Please bring back this option. It's ridiculous that it isn't available. I don't want to have to swipe down every time to see a percentage when it should just naturally be there.
I politely asked for the choice to pick between the “%” and the icon which is about as useful as a weather rock (if it’s wet, its raining, if it’s dry, its not raining).
Your request will not be heard by Apple here. This is a user to user support forum and Apple does not participate here. For Apple to hear your request, you need to use the feedback link here, https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Yes, that is why I went to the “Future Features” link and posted the suggestion you just quoted.
Your additional post to repeat the link is redundant and does not add to the conversation — serving only as trolling and should be removed.
I’m so sorry! I just thought this was the place to ask for help! I have no idea how to remove my comment. I surely do not want to cause anyone any problems by leaving it up. I’m not very savvy about my new phone, but I am a willing learner! I hooe you have a blessed Christmas and thank you for trying to help me “fly right”!
I apologize for the confusion caused by my “ future feature” name for the link Chris provided. It is actually the “feedback” link, in which one of the categories is “Feature Request”. Since I view my feedback to be in that category, I merely referred to the link by that name.
That works but doesn’t stay there when I leave the control center! How do I get it to stay when I go to the regular screens?
Also, I never saw a future features link nor did I see any posts that related to mine when I posted it!
Being just days behind you in purchasing my Excess Max, I also noted the absence of the battery percent option. While I noted the limited space available, that doesn’t explain Apple’s choice in removing the user’s choice to make their own choice between choices.
Anyway, I wanted to thank the OP for posing the question, and for the reply directing us to the future feature link.

You can't.
