I have a 2011 MacMini Server and a 2011 13" MacBook Pro that are in the same boat.

It is not unusual for Apple to drop 6-7 year old computers or older for macOS upgrades.

Also, your 2011 is on the Apple obsolete list which is more reason for them not to support

I think that one of the reasons is that your macs graphics card does not support metal
