Headphones not working in XS Max

I just bought a XS Max and the headphones that came with it don't seem to be working. I also tried a lighting to 3.5 adapter I had from before and that didn't play either, although in both cases the iPhone recognizes the headphones are connected. Sound seems like its playing fine through the internal speakers. Any idea what I should do or should I try to return it/take it to Apple?

Headphones are on warranty (as your new iPXSM).

Go to your most convenient Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider and demonstrate your issue.
