This folder seesms to be a good idea. However, mine has 5.600 items with the oldest opened last in February 20, 2006. That seems pretty recent. Does anyone know how to tame this folder?

I tame it by not showing it in the Finder Favorites panel, and in Finder Preferences : New Finder windows show: house icon with short user name — not the recents folder option. I know of no means to restrict the count of items that goes into the Recents folder.
Instead, I set my System Preferences : General to 10 Recent Items, and confer with menu : Recent Items to see the last ten recent documents — if I even need too. If I want to see all documents of a particular kind that were created or modified on a given date, I resort to Spotlight:
