Will an update fix signal issues for XS and XS Max?

I bought an iPhone XS (for my wife) and XS Max (for me) on launch day. I’m now getting dropped calls (in places I’ve never dropped calls before), random undeliverable texts, poor LTE speeds (<1Mbps!!) and poor WiFi performance. Our older iPhone 6 and 7 Plus, which thankfully we still have, has better WiFi throughput in our house and gets a signal in all areas of the house. The newer phones lose signal in our bedroom sometimes, which is only 30 ft from the router. No more WiFi signal at our mailbox or even the front door. If an update will fix these problems, then I will wait. If not, or there are no guarantees, I will return them. We love everything else about the phones. We just need the cellular and WiFi performance issues resolved. Thanks.

Man att charged me the restocking fee (1st phone I returned) although after chatting with a CS rep it was credited to my account. To tell you the truth I had to go through 6 phones to get one that was working (Still slower LTE than my 7 and wifi 5GHz after 50 ft goes down to 1 bar from 3 but way better than the ones before it) 12.1 final version did nothing in reality to my wife's phone as it is still slower than my 7 on LTE (My work XS does 30+ mbps download whereas my personal 7 pulls 90+) and on our Gigabit internet took her 1.5 hours to update 10 apps because I left the phone in our room and closed the door (17 apps needed to be updated overall) but today because I could not return it anymore I went to an apple store and exchanged hers and seriously hers is now as fast as my 7 on LTE, well 75 mbps CONSTANT and has a stronger connection over wifi than my works XS and faster too. I have written this before and I know it is a hassle but maybe exchanging them again would work for you. I know there are many people here telling you to wait and wait and wait for another update, dude when you can't use your gps, nor make calls longer than 2 min because it drops, nor load pages consistently, you can't be waiting for an update.

Good news. It appears a software update by Apple or the Carrier (in my case, ATT) “should” be able to fix this. Hopefully Apple monitors these posts....

After having numerous dropped calls and poor LTE speeds, including Apple giving me a replacement XS Max that saw no improvement, I figured out how to eliminate our dropped calls. This fix for us was simple. I went into cellular settings and switched LTE off. By default, it was set to voice and data. Yes, I will lose HD calling and LTE speeds unless I change the setting, but I’m on day 3 of turning off LTE and I’ve not had 1 dropped call. I can also access video and other apps near my home over cellular, which I was unable to do before turning LTE off. Based on my recent experience, it appears the phone is locking onto a LTE tower and is not switching over to a slower, but more accessible, 4G tower. So when the LTE signal drops completely out, I get a dropped call. Hopefully a software update can be applied to force the phone to switch to a closer tower instead of dropping the call. Seems easy enough, but I could be wrong. The reason this issue only affects a small percentage of users is likely due to the location of the LTE tower. In my area, LTE is sparse. If I go to the closest city, which is Nashville, my speeds are faster than ever and I never get dropped calls.

I got my iPhone X’s MAx repalaced 3 times and seems that 3rd was the charm.

Try resetting network settings see if it helps if not I to the apple store and return it and ask for a new one.

If you got it at an att store return it and tell them your having problems and you want to return the phone unless they have a replacement. If not get your money back and go upgrade at an apple store. Luckily for me my apple store had plenty in stock for me to get another one 3 times.

Here are my speeds with my 3 Xs Max everything seems to be working now and data no issues so far expecting from the reception being low only picking up 1 bar if I’m lucky 2 bars but so far these are my speeds. Pretty darn good I say.

I CAN SURELY TELL YOU THAT APPLE ENGINEERS ARE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND IM SURE THEY WILL SEND OUT AN UPDATE HOPEFULLY ITS NOT THE DEVCIES LIKE THE IPHONE 4. MY LAST 2 IPHONES APPLE CAPTURED THEM TO DO MORE INVESTIGATING ON WJATS GOING ON. THEY DID TELL ME THEY ARE AWARE OF THR POSTS ON THE FORUMS HERE AND ONLINE.

Update: I just found out that my XS Max works MUCH better with a router that supports 256QAM, although it’s still much slower (compared to older iPhones) on a router without 256QAM. I went from 185/284Mbps on my old Netgear R6400 router to 411/452Mbps on the ATT supplied BGW210 router. Best overall speeds, but not on the same testing attempt, were 461Mbps down and 562(!!)Mbps up. While this is MUCH better, I prefer using the Netgear due to the much longer range. Once I leave the living room and start going away from the routers location, there’s a huge drop off, much more than the Netgear. I may end up just buying a newer netgear router since my phone can take advantage of the newer tech. LTE is still slow today, but better than dialup: 2.3/2.1Mbps.

Reality is people should hold off on purchasing the phones to see if Apple fixes the problem. Since this is an antenna issues as the results show in the FCC testing, I don’t believe a software patch can fix it. As the blogger mentions a hardware revision might be what they need to do. This is Apple we are talking about. They will never admit to building an infior product, they will tell you are holding the phone wrong.

I took my second iPhone xs back today and am once again, using my iPhone 5 until I feel this hardware issue is resolved by Apple. I hated to walk out of Verizon without that phon. I loved all other features and functions, but I need a reliable phone for home and travel. The Verizon rep wanted me to take my iPhone xs home and call Apple Support to check out the tower signal near my home. I refused. It wasn't a fun conversation. "What did I do other than buy a $1,000 piece of hardware that has an issue".

My suggestion frankmig is to return the phone so it's sent back to Apple. It's their product. Their responsibility to release a phone without signal issues.

It is a phone after all. I understand hardware issues can happen but I would suggest upon new release of these products, the 14 day return window included a "no carrier fee" for restocking be made between the manufacturer and carrier. Why on earth would a customer be expected to pay a restocking fee. Verizon waived it but they made it sound like they are doing me a favor and will only do it once. Seriously, again. What did I do?

I contacted apple about this issue as well. I updated to the new iOS 12.1 and they then told me to reset my network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.

It worked! I have signal at my place (which I didn’t previously).

Hope that helps.

Has your iphone "continued" to work properly after you reset the network settings? I returned two phones and I'm back using my 5s until I hear if this issue is resolved. I reset my network settings on my iphone xs before the 12.1 update but don't recall doing it after, thinking the update would fix the issue which it didn't for me. Apple reached out to me, which I appreciate, but I had returned my iphones at that point. I need a new phone before traveling to Arizona in January and would like some comfort in knowing this will be resolved soon.

I can confirm, not speculate, that ios 12.0.1 has made “my” XS Max LTE and WiFi WORSE!!! LTE is now 0.66Mbps up/1.76Mbps down. Previous was 6.0/1.3. WiFi is now 185Mbps down/204Mbps up. Previous was 264/360.

My wife’s XS WiFi improved from 208/284 to 254/333. LTE was 0.79/2.13. Unfortunately, I didn’t run a LTE test on her phone prior to the update.

I reset the network connection on both phones and rebooted after the update. Guess I’ll be bringing these in for replacements.
