macOS Mojave with canon lbp2900 printer

Hello,

is there anyone still can use the old model printer Canon LBP2900 after updating to MacOS Mojave?

Download and install last CAPT drivers fromhttps://support-ph.canon-asia.com/contents/PH/EN/0100999320.html

and install a patch to allow LBP2900 to work from CAPT of LBP3000 - does not work (CAPT V10.0.0 install directory Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Printers⁩ ▸ ⁨Canon⁩ ▸ ⁨CUPSCAPT2, older versions CAPT directory CUPSCAPT). Fix path in PPDs - CNMCLBP2900AUK.ppd - does not work.

The LBP2900 isn't supported but since it's basically compatible with the LBP3000 we can use that driver. However it is necessary to patch it.

  • Download and install the driver for LBP3000 "CAPT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.0.0 [macOS 10.13/10.14" from here https://www.canon.com.au/laser-printers/laser-shot-lbp3000/support
  • Within the binary files /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT2/Bidi/captmoncnab3 and /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT2/cnaccm/CnAC28B9.DAT replace all occurrences of "LBP3000" with "LBP2900". You can use the free iHex software available on the App Store to do that. Don't use a Text Editor. You can also download the two patched files from here https://ufile.io/347i3
  • Save the modified files and reboot. Eventually make a backup copy of them before overwriting.
  • Connect the LBP2900 to the USB Port and in the System Preferences add a Driver for it specifying the Canon LBP3000 Driver.

Enjoy

After installing the above mentioned LBP3000 "CAPT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.0.0 [macOS 10.13/10.14]" driver you have to replace the 2 driver files with the 2 patched files using Finder.

  • Download the patched file archive
  • Open the downloaded file archive, you will find the two mentioned files captmoncnab3 and CnAC28B9.DAT
  • Using Finder copy those 2 files in the system folder /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT2 replacing the two existing files. You must replace the existing files.
  • Then reboot.

P.S.: The 2 files are the patched version of the driver "CAPT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.0.0" are relative to the driver version: "For macOS 10.14, macOS 10.13 Updated 01 Jan 0001 24 Sep 2015".

  • Disconnect the printer from your Mac.
  • Uninstall current printer (if possible also the driver) and reboot.
  • Download and install the driver for LBP3000 "CAPT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.0.0 [macOS 10.13/10.14" from here https://www.canon.com.au/laser-printers/laser-shot-lbp3000/support
  • Download the patched files http://andreaplanet.com/useful-uploads/patched_driver_lbp2900_for_mojave.zip
  • In the Finder Menu do "GO"->"GO TO FOLDER..." as shown in the screenshot a few posts above.
  • The Finder will ask you for a folder. Paste the text "/Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT2/Bidi". Note the initial slash / before Library.
  • The Finder will show you the contents of the folder. You should find there a file called captmoncnab3. Replace it with the patched file contained in the downloaded file patched_driver_lbp2900_for_mojave.zip. You must replace an existing file. If you are not replacing an existing file then you are not patching it correctly. You need to give the Administrator password because it is a system file.
  • Then again, in the Finder Menu do "GO"->"GO TO FOLDER...". Specify the folder "/Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT2/cnaccm". Note the initial slash /.
  • You should find there a file called CnAC28B9.DAT. Replace it with the patched file contained in the downloaded file patched_driver_lbp2900_for_mojave.zip. Again you must replace an existing file else it won't work.
  • Reboot.
  • Connect the LBP2900 to the USB Port and in the System Preferences add a Driver for it specifying the Canon LBP3000 Driver.

I did this installation for a friend, I neither have mojave nor that printer, so my help is limited now.

I know that it would be more convenient to have an installer for all this. There is an PKG installer/patcher for the old drivers but it doesn't work anymore because the new Canon drivers changed the installed path slightly.

I had the same problem. Carefully follow the instructions from andreaplanet. If you connect your printer in the beginning or during the installation process it wont't work.

0. Install iHex from the App Store

1. Find the two files in the Finder.

2. Change your permission on those files with : Right Click > Get Info : Unlock the lock (bottom-right), then change permission to "Read & Write" for your account (admin, for example).
3. Open the files by Right Click > Open With > Others ... Select iHex that you just installed from the App Store.

4. On iHew, do Cmd + F to open Search bar. Select "Text", then type on Find : LBP3000 and Replace With : LBP2900 ; Click Replace All

5. Save the file (CMD + S)

6. Reboot and follow instructions.
Hope it helps !

Following advice / support in Sept / Oct 2018, I was able to get my Canon LBP2900 to act as LBP3000 and work effectively with MacOS Mojave on iMAC. Sadly, over the last few days I can no longer print and get the error message on printer icon 'Application not responding'. Besides 'buy a new printer' any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Huge thanks, B
